Roscommon Equine services can offer the breeder access to professional, safe and competent horse people to help deliver the complete package of assisting your mare to
foal down, young horse handling and weaning.
We also offer starting under saddle/harness, re-training and rider/driver/handler education.
Foaling
At Roscommon we have a dedicated foaling paddock that is well rested and kept fresh for our newborns. Mares are monitored daily and wear alarms to notify us when the 2nd stage labour is underway. The mare is supervised through the foaling process and, if needed, assistance will be provided by our qualified operators. The foal is examined and observed until it is determined that it can stand and drink unaided, and that the mare is accepting of the foal and suffered no ill effects from the birth.
Young Horse Care
In our training and care of the young horse, we teach him that he has nothing to fear from us, but he also learns respect. The youngster learns to accept being touched all over and lifting of the feet. We then begin on teaching the foal understanding of yielding to pressure, to then acceptance of lead and headcollar. From this point we focus on leading, acceptance of hoof trimming, tying up and floating.

Weaning
At Roscommon we offer the mare and foal owner a weaning service. The focus of our weaning method is to reduce stress, injury and weight loss in both the mares and foals. We do this by yard weaning so both parties can see and touch each other but the foal is  not able to suckle. We have found this method to the most beneficial to both horses.
Starting under Saddle or in harness
Our philosophy when starting horses under saddle, or in harness, is to work with the horse and to keep the process simple to aid in their acceptance and understanding of the training. As horses differ in personalities, the training process could take 4 to 6 weeks to reach a point where a saddle horse can be ridden out on its own or in company, accept a stockwhip cracking and other things such as tarps whilst being ridden, open and shut gates, gaining correct leads and moving off the leg, all in a relaxed manner.
Education
At Roscommon Equine Services we offer the owner, or potential owner, education in care and management of horses. We also offer lessons in handling, riding and driving  for the horse enthusiast and their equine partner.
